UPDATE: Crews responding to downtown gas leak
Natural gas service has been shut off along South White Street until the ruptured gas line can be repaired. Dominion Energy officials will be notifying affected downtown businesses.
In the meantime, South White and East Owen Avenue have reopened to traffic and the evacuation has been lifted.
The information below was distributed on December 15 at 12:50 pm:
Emergency personnel are on the scene of a ruptured gas line at the intersection of South White Street and East Owen Avenue. The gas line was ruptured by crews working in the area.
Due to the ruptured gas line, traffic is blocked along both directions of South White and East Owen. Motorists are urged to avoid the area and choose an alternate route.
In addition, several downtown businesses are without natural gas service. Dominion Energy crews are on the scene, but there is no timetable on when the leak will be sealed, gas service restored and the roads reopened.
Officials are monitoring the affected area. Out of an abundance of caution, several downtown businesses have been evacuated.
Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
