Citizens Planning Academy
In 2009 the Board of Commissioners directed planning staff to develop a training program for citizens aspiring to serve on the Planning Board. The commissioners saw the need to provide an educational opportunity in order to reduce the learning curve of newly appointed Planning Board members as well as to expose citizens to the requirements and expectations of the position.
The first Planning Board Academy was assembled in 2011 and comprised of seated Planning Board and Board of Commissioners, as well as select citizens. The initial academy proved to be beneficial and rewarding and, as a result, the Board of Commissioners elected to fund and continue the Academy on an annual basis.
In 2019, the Planning Board Academy was renamed the Citizens Planning Academy (CPA). The CPA is now less about statutory requirements related to Planning and serving on the Planning Board and more about educating residents of Wake Forest and its extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ) about the Town’s planning processes and practices.
CPA topics now emphasize public hearings procedures, legislative and quasi-judicial decisions, the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO), Transportation Planning, Historic Preservation, Architectural Review, and more.
The Citizens Planning Academy is designed to educate residents of Wake Forest and its extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ) about the Town’s planning processes and practices. The topics will have an with emphasis on public hearings procedures, legislative and quasi-judicial decisions, the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO), Transportation Planning, Historic Preservation, Architectural Review, and more.
Sessions will be taught by the Planning Department staff and guest speakers.
