Large dog portion of Flaherty Dog Park to be closed Wednesday for maintenance

Monday, June 8, 2020 - 12:52pm

The large dog exercise area of Flaherty Dog Park, 1100 N. White St., will be closed for maintenance Wednesday, June 10, until 3:30 p.m. Crews are expected to close the area at least once more during the week of June 15 to complete the necessary repairs.

The Town of Wake Forest opened Flaherty Dog Park in June 2007. The three-acre park currently features a paved entrance and two exercise areas. Each of the fenced areas – one for small dogs and one for larger dogs – includes grass cover, picnic tables, shade trees, waste stations and a water fountain for both dogs and people. The fenced areas are accessible through a double-gated entry system designed to allow dog owners the opportunity to remove or fasten dog leashes prior to entering or exiting the facility.

A major renovation project was recently completed at the park. Renovations included:

  • New fencing and self-closing gates;

  • Fully accessible main entrance with large concrete area and separate entrance and exit gates;

  • Secondary entrance/exit;

  • Fully accessible shade structure;

  • Fully accessible water fountain and pet fountain with jug/bowl filler;

  • New configuration to include new tree shade areas;

  • Grading to insure smooth surface and positive water drainage;

  • Hardwood chip surfacing as needed.
