Wake Forest Power (WFP) Lineman Hugo Mier was the first-place overall winner at the 2025 NC Association of Municipal Electric Systems (NCAMES) Lineman’s Rodeo held May 15 in Rocky Mount, NC. This marks the second year in a row and third time since 2019 Mier earned the top prize.

Mier, Joe Shearin, and Corey Puccio competed against over 25 other linemen in the Journeyman division, while Jimmy Cira, Chason Severini, Ryan Shearin, and Joshua Puente-Castro participated in the Apprentice division. A qualified Journeyman has more than five years of experience in line work, while a qualified Apprentice has less than five years of line work experience.

The NCAMES Lineman’s Rodeo is an opportunity for public power linemen throughout North Carolina to put their skills to the test and compete against their peers in several job-related categories. Each contestant is scored on safety procedures, work practices, equipment handling, neatness, and timely completion of the event. The linemen rely on their daily work practices to excel in these events.

In addition to finishing first overall, Mier earned first place honors in the hurtman rescue, tie and untie, and obstacle course and second place honors in the crossarm changeout. Shearin placed second in the hurtman rescue.

Mier’s first place finish overall qualifies him to participate at the 2026 American Public Power Association Lineworkers Rodeo in Huntsville, Alabama.

In related news, former Wake Forest Public Works Director Mike Barton and Wake Forest Power Lineman Chad Champion were inducted into the NCAMES Lineworkers Hall of Fame. The two were formally recognized for their contributions to NCAMES, including their work on various safety committees, the annual lineman’s rodeo, and national lineworkers rodeo.

The purpose of NCAMES is to promote the interest and welfare of Municipal Electric Systems of the state of North Carolina; to assist these systems in the advancement in the design, construction, maintenance, administration, and operation of these systems; to develop improvements in safety and training; to encourage closer relationships between these systems; to encourage the adherence of municipal electrical supervisors to a higher professional standard; and to offer an opportunity to discuss and exchange information , ideas and experiences and through these purposes to encourage and promote municipal electrical service. Wake Forest Power to discontinue use of door hangers to notify delinquent customers about service disconnections beginning July 1

Beginning July 1, 2025, Wake Forest Power (WFP) will discontinue the use of door hangers to notify customers with overdue electric bills of an impending service disconnection for non-payment.

For several years, in addition to calling and texting customers with delinquent balances, WFP staff have distributed door hangers at the addresses of those customers as another means of notifying them about the imminent disconnection of their electric service. Due to the escalating cost of producing the door hangers and the staff hours spent distributing them, WFP officials recently made the decision to discontinue the practice starting in July.

WFP will continue to call and text delinquent customers to notify them of an impending disconnection, so customers are strongly encouraged to ensure up to two accurate phone numbers are associated with their account.

Customers with delinquent balances can avoid service disconnection by contacting Customer Service and setting up payment arrangements. For more information, call Customer Service at 919-435-9478.

Wake Forest Power recognized for reliable electric service

Wake Forest Power (WFP) has received national recognition for achieving exceptional electric reliability in 2024. The recognition comes from the American Public Power Association (APPA), a trade group that represents more than 2,000 not-for-profit, community-owned electric utilities.

APPA helps electric utilities track power outage and restoration data through its subscription-based eReliability Tracker service. Once per year, APPA’s Reliability Team compares this data to national statistics tracked by the U.S. Energy Information Administration for all types of electric utilities.

“Year after year, data consistently demonstrate public power utilities provide highly reliable service.” said APPA Director of Research and Development Paul Zummo. “The utilities recognized here are truly elite when it comes to keeping the lights on. Their communities should be proud of the hard work and dedication of their local power providers as they earn this truly deserved recognition.”

Nationwide, the average public power customer has their lights out for less than half the amount of time that customers of other types of utilities do.

Locally, WFP conducts annual reviews of its system to identify areas that may need improvement and performs ongoing maintenance to prevent service interruptions.

According to the numbers for 2024, WFP’s average outage time was only 39 minutes, compared to 168 minutes for other electric providers in our region, and 96 minutes for utilities of a similar size. This means that measured over approximately 9,100 electric meters, a WFP customer’s total outage time was roughly two hours shorter than the local average and nearly an hour shorter than similar-sized utilities.

“We are proud to receive this recognition,” said Electric Utility Director Chris Terrell. “It is a testament to the hard work of all our employees to ensure that the lights stay on for all our customers.”

According to Terrell, WFP’s success can be traced to several factors, including its year-round tree-trimming efforts, the widespread installation of underground power lines, and the collaboration of engineers, linemen, and supervisors in the development of best practices that help reduce outage incidents, but when they occur ensure faster restorations.

A division of the Town of Wake Forest, Wake Forest Power works year-round to provide uninterrupted electric service to over 9,100 residential and commercial customers. Through its Reliability Improvement Program, WFP operates and maintains two electric substations and more than 110 miles of overhead electric distribution lines. Due to these efforts, WFP customers enjoy dependable electric service 99.9% of the time. For more information about Wake Forest Power, visit www.wakeforestnc.gov/wake-forest-power.

Winter Weather Update – openings, closings & schedule changes

The winter storm that left over three inches of powdery snow in Wake Forest is history, but its impacts linger. Although most primary and secondary roads have improved, ice that melted today will likely refreeze overnight.

As a result, patchy black ice is expected to be a major concern over the next few days as temperatures drop well below freezing. If you must venture out, slow down, avoid using cruise control, use your low-beam headlights to better see icy pavement, and give extra following distance to allow more stopping time.

Also, before you drive, remove the ice and snow from your vehicle, particularly from the hood, windows, and roof. Ice and snow that dislodges from a moving vehicle can create hazardous driving conditions for other vehicles resulting in property damage and/or injury.

Public Works

Public Works crews are working tirelessly to treat Town-owned roads. Crews are spreading sand and salt along main thoroughfares and historically icy areas. Now that the ice has started to thaw, crews are also plowing primary and main streets within neighborhoods.

Residents are urged not to park on the street, so plows and other Town equipment can effectively service the area. As a reminder, the Town does not clear school parking lots or private parking lots, including those in apartment and condominium complexes or at businesses.

Openings & Closings

  • Wake Forest Town Hall, 301 S. Brooks St., will open Friday at 10 a.m.

  • Yard waste collection will run according to the normal schedule unless or until road conditions become hazardous.

  • Additional information will be provided as it becomes available, including updates to this week’s recycling collection schedule.

Town Hall

  • The Wake Forest Town Hall, 301 S. Brooks St., will open at 8 a.m. Wednesday. Town officials will monitor conditions throughout the day and make adjustments as necessary.

Public Works

On Monday, crews began applying brine to Wake Forest bridges, overpasses, and traditional slick spots. Staff will continue such preparations through Tuesday evening.

Once snow accumulates on the roads, crews will spread salt and sand on town-owned primary and secondary roads as needed. After two-to-four inches of snow accumulates, crews of 10 will use eight plows to begin clearing primary roads in 12-hour shifts. They will continue plowing town-owned primary roads until they are passable. Crews will then transition to town-owned secondary roads before moving to residential streets as a last priority. This Powell Bill Map identifies NCDOT-maintained roads and Town-owned roads.

It is important to note that as snow amounts fluctuate, crews will move back and forth between primary and secondary roads. Based on this forecast, you can expect that the street in front of your home will not be plowed until Thursday evening or Friday morning.

You can help us be safe and move more quickly by staying off the road, moving your car into your driveway, and being prepared to stay home for the next three days.

Wake Forest has over 300 tons of sand/salt mix supply on site, along with eight truck-mounted plows, one motor grader and two backhoes available to clear Wake Forest's 156 miles of roads. Crews are positioned to respond around the clock until this event has ended and roads are safe.

In the event of ice or snow, crews will clear thoroughfares and primary roads first. Motorists are urged not to park on the street, so plows and other Town equipment can effectively service the area. The Town does not clear school parking lots or private parking lots, including those in apartment and condominium complexes or at businesses.
