The Town of Wake Forest is in the process of creating a Sustainability Plan to serve as a guide for both Town operations and community-wide sustainability initiatives. Development of a Town-wide sustainability plan is a priority within Strategic Plan Goal 4: Investing in Transportation and Infrastructure.
Wake Forest has contracted with Blue Strike Environmental for this effort, which will consist of an existing conditions analysis, including a greenhouse gas inventory and climate vulnerability assessment; goal development; and strategy and recommendations with engagement occurring throughout.
The project began late summer of 2025 and is anticipated to be completed in late 2026. The baseline analysis has been completed, including internal and external policy review, a greenhouse gas inventory, and a climate vulnerability assessment. Engagement activities have included targeted and general public outreach through board meeting presentations, steering committee meetings, focus groups, an online survey, in-person open house sessions, and tabling at community events. Draft goals, strategies, and actions have been developed using the findings from the baseline analysis and engagement to date. These draft recommendations were shared at public meetings and at public open house sessions in August 2026 and can be viewed through the documents listed below. Recommendations will be refined using feedback from these engagement efforts before moving into adoption. Input may also be shared through Engage Wake Forest.

Emergency personnel are on the scene of a ruptured gas line along South Brooks Street between East Owen Avenue and East Wait Avenue. The ruptured line was caused by construction workers.
South Brooks is closed between East Owen and East Wait. Motorists are urged to avoid the area and choose an alternate route.
Officials are monitoring the affected area for safety considerations. The Wake Forest Town Hall, 301 S. Brooks St., and Norse Brewing, 203 S. Brooks St., have been evacuated, but no other evacuations have been ordered at this time. Residents in the area are urged to shelter in place until further notice.
Anyone in the vicinity of South Brooks Street smelling a strong natural gas odor is urged to call 9-1-1.
