“May Month of Fitness” to feature Women’s Self Defense, Camp Gladiator, Yoga, Zumba & Line Dance

Wednesday, April 19, 2023 - 11:30am

The Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources (PRCR) Department will offer a free outdoor fitness series five nights a week in May at E. Carroll Joyner Park, 701 Harris Road. Free and open to residents of all ages, May Month of Fitness will consist of the following weekly classes:

  • Mondays – Women’s Self Defense
  • Tuesdays – Camp Gladiator
  • Wednesdays – Yoga
  • Thursdays – Zumba
  • Fridays – Beginner Line Dancing

All classes are free and require no registration. Each will be offered from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Joyner Park Amphitheater.

Participants will receive a giveaway each night while supplies last. In addition, participants can scan the onsite QR code, complete the prize registration form, and be entered into the May Month of Fitness prize drawings sponsored by Orthopedic Physical Therapy Associates and Thomas Walters Allstate. The more classes you attend, the more times you can register, and the greater your chances of winning a prize.

On Mondays, instructors from Quest Martial Arts will teach participating women a variety of techniques to avoid danger and defend themselves if necessary. Sessions will focus on practical and instinctive methods to get you out of harm’s way. Participants are encouraged to bring water.

Camp Gladiator is an adult fitness boot camp that promises a motivating and challenging environment where men and women of all ages and fitness levels can push themselves. Participants should expect a total body workout. A typical session could include interval training, sprint and agility drills, stations, plyometrics, body weight strength drills, cardio mix, and much more. Camp Gladiator is designed to increase your functional strength, speed, stamina and - most importantly - deliver results. Camp Gladiator participants are encouraged to bring a mat and water.

Yoga is a mind and body practice. Various styles of yoga combine physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation or relaxation. Yoga participants should bring a mat and water.

Zumba is an aerobic fitness program featuring movements inspired by various styles of Latin American dance and performed primarily to Latin American dance music. Participants are encouraged to bring water.

During Beginner Line Dancing, participants will have fun while learning basic line dance steps. Line Dance is a great way to reduce stress, strengthen memory, and keep your body in motion. Participants will learn moves, including the Electric Slide, Casper Slide, Cupid Shuffle, Wobble, and a few others. No experience needed. Participants are encouraged to bring water.
