BikeSafe NC Rider Skills DayThe Wake Forest Police Department is hosting a series of free BikeSafe Rider Skills Days at the Wake Forest Police Department, 745 Merritt Capital Dr., Suite 113, on the following Fridays:

  • April 10
  • April 24
  • June 5
  • June 19
  • August 14
  • September 25

Each session begins promptly at 8:45 p.m.

Area motorcyclists are invited to participate in the course designed to make riding a motorcycle safer and more enjoyable.

Advance registration is required and space is limited to the first 11 people to register.

Areas of Emphasis

BikeSafe Rider Skills Days involve background information and training related to five areas:

  1. Motorcycle Control - acceleration, braking, clutch control, and smoothness;
  2. Hazard Management - observation, planning, approach position, safety margin, reaction to signs, perception of danger and reaction to danger;
  3. Cornering - curve assessment, approach position, approach speed and safety margin;
  4. Overtaking - planning and following position;
  5. Roadcraft - mirrors and rear obstacles, use of signals and attitude. 

The course includes classroom discussion, along with advice and active riding skills assessment by qualified BikeSafe assessors. 

 

Agenda

The typical agenda includes:

  • Morning classroom session
  • Short Ride (Students are paired with assessors and ride a specified route for around 30-40 minutes)
  • Break for Lunch
  • Afternoon classroom session (Includes feedback from motor officers)
  • Long Ride (Students are paired with assessors and ride a specified route for around 45-60 minutes)
  • Final classroom session involving feedback from motor officers

 

Bring to Class

On the day of the event, participants will be required to bring the following to class: 

  • Legal Motorcycle Endorsement or Motorcycle Learner's Permit
  • Students must bring a properly insured and registered motorcycle to ride for class
  • Legal Helmet (must meet the D.O.T. safety standard)
  • Over-the-ankle foot protection
  • Long sleeve shirt
  • Long pants
  • Full fingered gloves
  • Eye Protection (if not wearing a full-faced helmet)
