WAKE FOREST, NC - A winter storm left approximately three inches of powdery snow in Wake Forest. Road crews spent the day plowing the town's main roads, bridges and hills, while also spreading sand and salt in historically icy areas.

Although road conditions improved throughout the day, freezing temperatures overnight will cause black ice to form in areas where snow melted and refreezes. As a result, travel is expected to be extremely hazardous, especially during mornings and evenings.

Openings & Closings

  • Wake Forest Center for Active Aging and Meals on Wheels will be closed Monday.
  • All PRCR facilities will be closed Monday, including Joyner Park Community Center, Flaherty Park Community Center, Alston-Massenburg Center, and Wake Forest Community House.

Schedule/Service Changes

  • Republic Services (RS) will suspend trash and recycling service on Monday. As a result, this week's trash and recycling routes will be collected one day later than normal and extend into Saturday. So, (for example) Monday's route will be collected Tuesday and Friday’s route will be collected Saturday.
    • PLEASE NOTE: RS planned to service the Thursday and Friday recycling routes on Monday after last week's winter weather prevented their regular collection. However, due to icy road conditions forcing the suspension of tomorrow's trash and recycling service, RS will be unable to service the Thursday and Friday routes until Friday and Saturday. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding as we work through these recent winter weather challenges.
  • Yard waste collection will also be suspended Monday.
  • Go Wake Forest will resume service Monday at 10 a.m.

Wake Forest Power

In the event power outages occur, Wake Forest Power crews are prepared and ready to respond. However, restoration efforts may be delayed by hazardous road conditions, meaning some outages could last longer than normal. Still, crews will respond as quickly as is safely possible to get the power back on.

If you lose power

  • Wake Forest Power customers call 919-435-9478 or report the outage online.
  • Wake Electric customers call 855-280-1147.
  • Duke Energy Progress customers call 800-419-6356.

Help Lower Peak Demand

Please reduce energy use Monday morning during peak demand between 6-8 a.m.

Colder than normal temperatures are driving high energy demand which is limiting power supplies - not just in our area but up and down the East Coast.

Below are proactive steps you can take to help manage utility consumption, which can reduce the system’s load and lessen the shock of a higher-than-expected bill.

  • Lower the temperature of your heat a few degrees during peak hours
  • Put on a sweater, long pants and socks to stay warm instead of turning up the heat
  • Cover drafty windows and doors
  • Turn off pool heaters during peak hours
  • Avoid charging electric vehicles during peak hours
  • Reduce the use of hot water during peak periods, including the use of appliances like dishwashers and washing machines
  • Heating and cooling systems (HVAC) are most often the largest energy draws for a home and can account for roughly half of the annual energy consumption.

We understand that reducing your energy use, especially during colder than normal periods, is challenging, but we appreciate your consideration and cooperation.
