Wake Forest urging property owners to avoid overgrown lawns
The grass may not always be greener on your side of the fence, but if it’s too tall, you may receive a violation notice from the Town of Wake Forest.
We are approaching the time of year when spring rains cause rapid grass growth, catching some homeowners unprepared or unwilling to deal with their lawn. Town officials say that can become a problem because overgrown lawns are not only unsightly, but they can also create a fire hazard when its dry and conceal rats, mice, and snakes that enjoy living in grassy areas.
That’s why the Town’s Zoning Enforcement Division is educating property owners about the rules - and why they were adopted.
The Wake Forest Code of Ordinance sets the maximum allowed grass height at 12 inches.
When tall grass is reported or observed, Zoning Enforcement visits the property and measures the grass. If the property is in violation (taller than 12 inches), officials take pictures for documentation purposes, then mail a certified letter to the property owner.
The Town gives property owners 10 days to cut their grass. Most comply, but those who don’t have their yards mowed by a contractor engaged by the Town but paid for by the property owner.
