Police investigating shooting along East Nelson Avenue

***UPDATE – Earlier today (Tuesday, Sept. 9), the victim in this incident, Ericka Lucas, 56, died as a result of injuries she sustained on Friday, Aug. 29.

Late this afternoon, the Wake Forest Police Department (WFPD) arrested Dexter Lamont Mills, 18, in connection with this incident. Mills, 400 North Allen Road, Wake Forest, and a 16-year-old juvenile arrested on August 30 have each been charged with murder.

The preliminary investigation suggests Ericka Lucas was not the intended target.

***UPDATE – The preliminary investigation indicates the victim in yesterday’s shooting was not specifically targeted. Officials believe she was struck by gunfire intended for someone else along East Nelson Avenue. 

In addition, investigators say this was not a drive-by shooting.

This is an ongoing investigation. As a result, Wake Forest Police will not identify the school in which the arrested juvenile attends.

***UPDATE - The Wake Forest Police Department (WFPD) has arrested a 16-year-old juvenile in connection with this incident. The juvenile has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and inflicting serious injury.

The WFPD has identified the victim as Ericka Ruffin Lucas, wife of Wake Forest High School Football Coach Reggie Lucas.

Just after 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 29, Wake Forest Police responded to a reported shooting along the 600 block of East Nelson Avenue.  

Upon their arrival, officers located a 56-year-old female suffering from a gunshot wound. The individual was transported to a local hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries.

This appears to be an isolated incident, and there is no danger to the public.
