UPDATE: Gas leak closes portion of Elm Avenue

The gas leak along Elm Avenue has been sealed and the evacuation order lifted for the Wake Forest Town Hall, the Wake Forest Police Department and The Forks Cafeteria. The evacuation order for the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre and the other businesses in Renaissance Place is expected to be lifted in the next several minutes.

The portion of Elm Avenue from South Taylor Street to South Franklin Street remains closed to motorists and pedestrians.

Due to the gas leak along Elm Avenue, the Wake Forest Town Hall, 301 S. Brooks St., is being evacuated, along with the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre, 405 S. Brooks St., and The Forks Cafeteria, 339 S. Brooks St.

Wake Forest Police have closed Elm Avenue near the intersection of South Brooks Street due to a ruptured gas line.

Motorists and pedestrians are urged to avoid the area and choose an alternate route.

Officials are monitoring the affected area for safety considerations. No evacuations have been ordered at this time.

PSNC repair crews have been contacted and will work to seal off the leak. There is no timetable on when the leak will be capped.
