New traffic pattern for West Owen Avenue/South College Street set to begin October 11

Wednesday, September 29, 2021 - 1:57pm

On Monday, Oct. 11, Town crews will implement a new traffic pattern along South College Street and West Owen Avenue. The new design will reverse the current one-way system from south and east to west and north. As a result, drivers will be able to access West Owen Avenue from South Main Street/US 1A but prohibited from turning onto South College Street from South Avenue.

As part of the traffic reversal initiative, crews will also install three ADA compliant ramps into Holding Park, stripe new angled parking spaces, and erect new signage along the roadway. Weather-permitting, the work will be completed by Friday, Oct. 15.

Approved by the Board of Commissioners on September 21, the new traffic pattern is intended to provide easier access to Holding Park, Holding Park Aquatic Center, and the Wake Forest Community House – all located at 133 W. Owen Ave. Holding Park will remain open and accessible throughout the week of October 11. Park visitors are encouraged to park in the gravel parking lot across the street from the Community House.

Electronic message boards announcing the new traffic pattern will be set up during the week of October 4 to help alert motorists. For more information, email Streets Maintenance Manager Tim Bailey at [email protected].
