What will Wake Forest look like in 20 years?  The answer to that question is up to you.  It is up to all of us. 

The Town of Wake Forest currently relies on the adopted Town of Wake Forest Community Plan and Growth Strategies Map as a policy-based comprehensive plan with an action agenda to achieve implementation. The Community Plan was adopted in 2009 and it contains the vision statements, policies, and actions that have guided growth in the Town of Wake Forest for the last 10 years. The current plan is broken into the key sections: Town Areas; Town Transportation; Town Appearance; Growth Management; Quality of Life; and Growth Strategy Map. 

However, it is time to update this plan! Why is updating the plan so important? The Wake Forest Community Plan Update and Future Land Use Map will create a blueprint for our future—a land use plan to guide the Town in its decision-making for the next 10 years. 

Not only is it recommended that plans are updated every 10 years, but N.C.G.S. Session Law 2019-111 requires that for a town to retain zoning, the town must also have adopted a Comprehensive Plan by July 1, 2022, which further indicates the importance of a comprehensive plan. 

This Plan will outline the community's vision and guide development and investment in Wake Forest for the next 10 to 20 years. This 2-year process will result in a set of policies that direct future growth and will lead to potential strategies to help effectively guide Town leaders in making substantive and thoughtful decisions for the community.

In essence, the tool provides a way for anyone to create a map of their community, identifying their own issues, opportunities, weaknesses, and threats.

FAQs 

How can I get involved in this process?

It is important to get involved in all Wake Forest Community Plan Update and Future Land Use Map activities, from data collection, to community visioning and mapping, to the creation of community goals and policies. The Upcoming Public Input Opportunities section of this page describes all the opportunities available to provide your input, including public meetings, an online community survey, and an interactive mapping tool. Any meeting dates and times throughout the process will be listed to the project web page as they are scheduled. We already have other plans. What will happen to those?

Existing plans are an important part of the planning process. These plans will inform the update process and in some cases be incorporated into the new Community Plan if the goals and vision are still consistent with the community’s aspirations.

Who is involved in creating the updated plan?

The Town hired Houseal Lavinge in the summer of 2020 to update our 2009 Community Plan. Planning staff will manage the project. It is critical that all of Wake Forest’s stakeholders are involved in the development of the Wake Forest Community Plan Update and Future Land Use Map. The stakeholders vary and include, but are not limited to residents, businesses, municipal partners, community organizations, staff, and elected officials. The Town is committed to involving residents and the business community to craft a community vision for Wake Forest’s future. In addition, an advisory committee will be formed to provide a thorough evaluation and analysis of plan elements as they are prepared. Ultimately, the Wake Forest Community Plan Update and Future Land Use Map will be presented to the Planning Board for a recommendation and presented for adoption by the Board of Commissioners.

What are the typical contents of a community plan?

A typical use plan outlines the existing conditions of the community, describes future goals and objectives for development, and includes an action plan on how to achieve effective implementation. The Wake Forest Community Plan Update and Future Land Use Map will include detailed policies regarding land use and development, a future land use map visually representing these policies, and an implementation plan.

When will the update start and when will it be completed?

The Community Plan update process is anticipated to take 18-24 months. Although the planning process has been initiated, public engagement will begin in September 2020. The Wake Forest Community Plan Update and Future Land Use Map is anticipated to be completed at the end of 2021.
