Smith Creek Greenway June 13, 2008
The Town has targeted a 1.1 mile section along the Dunn Creek tributary of Smith Creek for the construction of its next trail. The segment extends north from the Smith Creek Soccer Center to the NC 98 by-pass, where the Town and DOT have already installed a pedestrian culvert. The new addition would extend the amount of paved trail along Smith Creek to nearly three miles. In 2005, area voters approved $500,000 in bond proceeds for trail construction. The Town has also secured a $50,000 Recreation Trails Grant, while a $365,000 Parks & Recreation Trust Fund grant is pending, and design for this section is underway.
Smith Creek is the number one priority in the Town’s “Open Space and Greenway Master Plan.” The seven-mile north/south corridor extends from the Neuse River to the Franklin County line. Also along this corridor, the Town has a paved ¾ mile section of trail just off Burlington Mills Road behind the Moss Creek/Caddell Woods subdivisions.
