The Town of Wake Forest has developed a number of programs to help educate citizens interested in learning about their local neighborhood streams and watershed ecology. These initiatives also serve to address and inform residents about local stormwater rules and regulations.
-
- Adopt a Stream Program - adopt a stream in your neighborhood by taking water quality samples, cleaning up trash and debris quarterly, reporting any log jams or eroded banks, beaver activity, or illicit discharge.

Water Quality Monitoring- The Smith Creek Watershed Monitoring Group was started in August 2008. It consists of a volunteer group of citizens set out to learn about streams, ecology, and monitor local water quality on 8 designated sites in Smith Creek Watershed. The program consists of monthly monitoring for pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus, turbidity, and conductivity. Monthly field trips to various locations throughout Wake Forest are coordiated to teach about macros, erosion, stream characteristics and water education.
The Town also is avaliable to offer instruction on engineering, stormwater, erosion, roadway/construction, and various environmental topics.
