NEWS AND UPDATES

Feb. 15, 2011

  • Chalk Road is now open to through traffic.

  • The road was re-opened this afternoon after crews finished the final portion of the realignment project - the paving.

  • Crews will continue to work in the area, so motorists should proceed with caution.

Feb. 11, 2011

  • Following a successful density test on Friday, the contractor will begin paving Chalk Road on Monday, Feb. 14.

Feb. 10, 2011

  • The contractor informed the Town this morning that final density tests will be performed Friday morning. Paving is expected to commence Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 14-15.

Jan. 18, 2011

  • The weather continues to cause delays. Last night's rain prevented the delivery of the final layer of stone.

  • The subgrade has to pass density tests before the asphalt can be laid. The contractor is preparing the subgrade today and hopefully can place the final stone layer tomorrow.

  • If the weather cooperates, we may get asphalt this week but more than likely it will be next week.

Jan. 7, 2011

  • The contractor is pouring the concrete for the curbing today (Jan. 7).

  • Weather-permitting, the contractor will begin laying the asphalt on Monday, Jan. 10.

Dec. 20, 2010

  • Work on Chalk Road is underway but has been seriously hampered by the unusually cold weather.

  • A significant portion of the project is both weather and temperature sensitive. The recent colder temperatures and mix of wintry weather have delayed the road construction.
    • In order for asphalt and concrete to set properly, temperatures must consistently remain above 40 degrees.
    • Asphalt is especially temperature sensitive. It requires higher temperatures and in the winter months many asphalt plants shut down completely so the availability of the material is limited.

  • Unanticipated utility conflicts have also hindered progress on the project.

  • The contractor will work throughout the week of Dec. 20, but will not work the week of Dec. 27 due to the Christmas and New Year's holidays. Work will resume the first Monday in January.
