2010 Census
In 2010, the US Census Bureau will be initiating the Local Update of Census Addresses program, LUCA which is a decennial census geographic partnership program that allows the Census Bureau to benefit from local knowledge in developing its MAF/TIGER Database (MTDB) for the 2010 Census. Tribal, state, and local governments are invited to contribute to a more complete and accurate census for their community by reviewing and commenting on the list of residential housing unit and group quarters addresses that the Census Bureau will use to deliver questionnaires. Planning Staff Attends Career Fair
Chad Sary & Charlie Yokley attended the Wake Forest-Rolesville High School Construction Technology Career Academy Career Fair at the Ninth Grade Center on February 9th. The purpose of the Fair was to informally talk with students about career opportunities and educational requirements in the field of Planning & Development.
Bill Summers to leave Planning Staff
Development Services Senior Planner, Bill Summers has taken a job as Town Manager with the Town of Kenly. Bill worked for the Town of Wake Forest for nearly 7 years and was instrumental in developing the Town’s GIS program while juggling many other tasks within the planning department. Bill’s last day will be Friday, February 26, 2010.
2009 Development Report
The Development Services staff completed the 2009 Annual Development Report. This report provides current information on population, housing, construction, and development activities. You can view this report on the Development Services homepage.
Development Ordinance review
The Planning Staff is in the early stages of reviewing the Town’s Land Use Codes & Ordinances with the intent to develop a Unified Development Ordinance (UDO). The Lawrence Group has been hired to perform a diagnostic analysis of the existing development codes and related plans and to prepare an outline for a new UDO. The first part of this process is Stakeholder Interviews beginning in late January.
Senate Bill 831
Please be advised that Senate Bill 831 (State Law 2009-406) was ratified by the North Carolina General Assembly on July 30, 2009 and signed by Governor Beverly Purdue on August 5, 2009. This Bill is known as the “Permit Extension Act of 2009” and was enacted to extend certain government approvals affecting the development of real property.
This new law states that for “…any development approval that is current and valid at any point during the period beginning January 1, 2008, and ending December 31, 2010, the running of the period of the development approval and any associated vested rights…is suspended during the period beginning January 1, 2008, and ending December 31, 2010.”
Therefore, any development approvals as defined in Section 3 of Senate Bill 831that were current or valid at any point during aforementioned time period are hereby suspended until January 1, 2011.

NC-98 Bypass Named
In September 2009, the Board of Commissioners officially chose “Calvin Jones Boulevard” as the name for the NC-98 Bypass. The Planning Staff is currently working with the Wake County Addressing Department and NCDOT to complete the paperwork involved with this road name designation.
Draft Transportation Plan Update 2009
In January 2003, the Town of Wake Forest adopted the Wake Forest Transportation Plan, which recommended improvements and strategies toaccommodate traffic growth and the desire for a diversified transportationsystem. Much has changed in the years since the 2003 plan was adopted. The Wake Forest Transportation Plan Update 2009 amends the 2003 Plan to incorporate changes, reflect recent planning, and strengthen the town’s vision for its future in the year 2035 and beyond.
Public Art Plan
The Town of Wake Forest received a grant from the North Carolina Arts Council and contributions from community partners to develop a plan for public art. The Wake Forest Board of Commissioners approved the Wake Forest Public Art Vision Plan on October 20, 2009.
The Board of Commissioners asked Staff to seek public input and bring the Public Art Vision Plan forward for public hearing.
Draft 2009 Hazard Mitigation Plan Update
A draft version of the Wake Forest Hazard Mitigation Plan Update 2009 is now available. The purpose of the plan is to help guide hazard mitigation planning to better protect the people and property of Wake Forest from the impacts of natural emergencies before, during, and after they occur.

There are numerous steps a property owner or tenant must take before starting a new business or relocating to an already existing building in downtown Wake Forest. It is imperative that potential businesses take the time to investigate the necessary requirements to establish a business in the Renaissance Area. The Department of Planning & Inspections has developed the Downtown & Renaissance Area Permitting page to provide additional assistance and guidance to anyone interested in commercial opportunites in downtown.
Planning Division Overview
Staff provides development and maintenance of land management documents including Zoning Ordinance and Land Use Plan; review of construction and land development; building inspections; code enforcement and support to the Planning Board, Board of Adjustment, Historic Preservation Commission and the Urban Forestry Board.
Administration
The Administration staff consists of the Planning Director, Planner (5 positions) and an Office Assistant. The Planning Director supervises, coordinates, and directs the personnel and work operations of the Department, which includes the Planning and Inspections Divisions. The Planners perform responsible professional level work in the areas of current and comprehensive planning, land use controls, and program administration. The Office Assistant provides administrative support to both the Planning and Inspection divisions of the Department.
