Ligon Mill Roadway Widening

The Town of Wake Forest received federal grant funds in the amount of $135,000 from the Surface Transportation Program - Direct Attributable funds (STP-DA) administered through the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) and NCDOT. STP-DA grants require a 20 percent local match (a total of $27,000), which was previously indentified in the Town of Wake Forest's Capital Improvement Program for FY2010-2011. The Town has procured the design services of SEPI Engineering for this project who will provide shovel ready plans for construction.

The Town will be widening Ligon Mill Road from US 1A (South Main Street) to the Wal-Mart driveway. The widening improvement is divided into two sections:

  • The roadway will be widened from 4 to 5 lanes in existing ROW from Wal-Mart driveway to Brimfield Springs Lane;
  • From 3 to 5 lanes from Brimfield Springs Lane to US-1A intersection with minimal ROW acquisition.

In addition to the widening of Ligon Mill Road restriping is proposed on the northbound approach to the intersection.  This approach currently provides enough pavement width therefore widening is not necessary to add the proposed turn lane.

 A public meeting regarding design details will be scheduled at a future date.
