The Wake Forest Urban Forestry Advisory Board's 5th Annual Tree Seedling Giveaway was held held Saturday, March 6 from in front of the Planning Department Annex, 205 S. Brooks St.
Altogether, approximately 500 area residents turned out for this popular community event.
The success of this year's tree seedling giveaway was again made possible only through the efforts of an outstanding group of volunteers.
The Wake Forest Urban Forestry Board, Wake Forest Presbyterian Church Boy Scout Pack 5 Webelos, and St. Catherine Cub Scout Pack 511 distributed over 1,700 Atlantic White Cedar, Eastern Red Cedar, Overcup Pak, Dogwood, Eastern Redbud, Persimmon, and Crape Myrtle tree seedlings. Master Gardeners and Arborists were also on hand to help residents decide which seedlings grow best in their respective yard conditions.
Planting instructions, along with useful information about the trees, are available along the right margin of this page under "ABOUT THE TREES."
Each year the UFAB sponsors the tree seedling giveaway in observance of Arbor Day, a nationally-celebrated observance that encourages tree planting and care. This year the Town of Wake Forest celebrated Arbor Day on March 11.
The UFAB is a citizen group appointed by the Wake Forest Board of Commissioners. The UFAB advises the Town of Wake Forest on proper tree maintenance in public areas and is committed to the growth and preservation of the urban forest. Wake Forest has been recognized by the National Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA for 31 consecutive years.
