Award-winning composer and multi-instrumentalist Alex Weiss & Different Drum will give a free performance Thursday, Nov. 8, at 9:30 a.m. at the Northern Wake Senior Center, 235 E. Holding Ave.
According to its website, Different Drum is a versatile ensemble that takes the rich ethnic sounds of Africa and Latin America and blends them with original compositions and jazz standards. The band has been performing throughout the Carolinas for schools, universities, multi-cultural festivals and communities with their unique “world best” sound since 1992.
An award-winning composer and music educator since 1978, Weiss is a recipient of the Emerging Artists Award from the Durham Arts Council and the NC Arts Council Songwriter’s Fellowship. He has also produced seven CDs that feature original compositions with Different Drum. His stories and Different Drum’s repertoire reflect Alex’s experiences in his travels throughout Mexico, Central America, North Africa, Europe and the Middle East. Alex and his ensemble perform as a trio, quartet or quintet. Instrumentation includes Dunnun, Djembe & Shekere (West African), Congas, Bongos, Tambor, Latin American Percussion, Bass Guitar, Wood Flutes, Trumpet, Saxophone, Harmonica and Drum Set.
All Wake Forest-area seniors are invited to attend the Nov. 8 performance. Space is limited, however, so seating is available on a first come basis.
The Alex Weiss & Different Drum performance is sponsored by the Wake Forest Parks and Recreation Department and United Arts of Raleigh and Wake County. For more information, call 919-435-9560.
